Late January ‘97 was spent with our friends from West Virginia, Fred and Wilma Flintstone (names have been changed to protect the innocent). Although no trout lives were sacrificed in the production of this photo chronicle, the anglers, trout and rivers featured requested anonymity.

Without rain in the Te Anau basin for six weeks, the rivers were at historic lows and perfectly clear.

We had three days of pure angling bliss, spotting nearly every fish before casting and raising most on bushy cricket, manuka beetle and adams dry fly imitations. And then, or course, there were the fish that got away.
