Better Than the Aussies

It is not very often that we can say we are better than the Aussies but this week we can gloat just a little. It is a wonder that we are better than them at anything as we and they are very similar in many repsects, but there are a lot more of them. Imagine a Southland school of 100 students expecting to beat another Southland school of 1000 in rugby, or net ball. Realistically it is only going to happen occasionally. For our size we do pretty well.

To be fair to the Aussies we are not really comparing apples with apples as New Zealand's climate and geology are much more suited to the production of trout than virtually any part of Australia is. Tasmania is a possible exception. I understand there is pretty good trout fishing there. Nevertheless there is no competition when it comes to variety and abundance of trout waters in New Zealand when compared to that on offer across the ditch. And we don't have any snakes!

The Gore District Council has capitalised on this and has sent people over to the Melbourne Fishing Show for many years to promote the great trout fishing we have in this region. For some time there was little response. Anglers in Aussie were quite happy to fish for perch and other inferior fish, but then a few started to come over and word soon got around. The fishing is fantastic mate!

Fish and Game rangers have noticed a big increase in the last couple of years especially, although the Australians still  make up less than 10% of the total.  Some anglers are concerned about the increase in the number of overseas anglers, but it has to be said that they do bring in export dollars and that is what makes the world go round.  One disappointing feature of the Australian angler is that as a group they have a higher incidence of being non licenced. Virtuallly all New Zealand anglers know a fishing licence is required to fish for trout here but it seems a number of our cousins do not. More publicity about this necessity at the Melbourne Fishing show might help.

Trout fishing is managed by anglers here and the licence fee is the principal source of revenue to maintain the high quality of the fishery.  If we can manage the influx of anglers we will maintain our advantage in the trout fishing stakes -something to remember next time the All Blacks take a tumble.
