TROUT FISHING WITH MAURICE RODWAY - Weekly Column: 13-October-00

Plenty of Places to Fish

This time last year the rivers were low and clear. Now it is different. A couple of weeks of wet weather have them high and discoloured. Despite this inclemency there are still plenty of places to fish for trout .

Ewen on Lake Wakatipu Lake fishing is good in the spring. Especially from the shore so anglers without boats can still enjoy these wonderful fisheries.

Most anglers fish Lake Waituna when it is open to the sea, and then at the outlet. At present it is not open to the sea but it can still provide good fishing. Trolling from a boat can be successful and fishing from the shore can be rewarding too. This lake is highly productive and regularly produces large trout. However it also has a low catch rate, typically about one fish per day. It is a place where the weather is often rough. Local knowledge is important and the best way to obtain that particular ingredient is to spend a lot of time there.

The gravely shores of Lake Wakatipu are readily accessible to anyone from the road between Invercargill and Queenstown. The road follows the shore up towards Glenorchy too. The best conditions occur when the sun is out and there is a gentle breeze. The trout are more easily seen from the shore but the angler is less easily seen from the water. Spin fishing and fly fishing can both be successful. This year the Otago Fish and Game Council has allowed bait fishing in Lake Wakatipu, following on from several seasons with this regulation on Lake Hawea. Those of you who would rather lie around on the beach this method may suit. It does suit the new family licence. Even the little ones can have a go - provided they are big enough to cast a line and reel in a fish.

The Mavora Lakes have been the preserve of shore based anglers for many years. Their smaller size, sandy margins and the clarity of the water are some of the reasons for this. While there are many rainbow trout in these lakes now, brown trout predominate in the lake margins. Anglers trolling on these lakes are more likely to catch rainbows. These fish are to be found out deeper so trollers should fish well out from the shore.  Anglers trolling on the south lake must do so without a motor. However a canoe is an ideal platform for exploring this bush clad lake anyway. In addition to increasing the chances of catching a fish trolling out in the deeper water will leave more space for the shore based anglers and a higher probability of restoring calm to your mind, and theirs too.
