Mavora Lakes
The South Mavora Lake (2.4km long) is one of the most picturesque and unspoilt
lakes in Southland. On a bright day the fish can be seen cruising round the beautiful bush-clad bays and well out into deeper water. The lake contains high densities of aquatic insects and the surrounding bush is a
good source of terrestrials.
The trout are generally in good condition and average 1.8 kg. Although some success has been had with spinning and large wet flies, especially at the outlet and inlet, this lake
is really the dry fly angler's paradise.
The North Lake Mavora is about 9.5 km long, more exposed, with some cruising beaches and a big proportion of deep water. It also carries a good stock of fish, with the
occasional larger specimen.
