Oreti River
The Oreti River rises in the vicinity of Cold Peak in the Thompson Mountains
and flows mainly in the southerly direction, firstly through high tussock land and some bush to emerge into lower lying tussock country, thence on through well-roaded flattish farming land to join the New River
estuary a few kilometres west of Invercargill.
Although this river affords the angler over 130 km of every type of angling for brown trout, ranging from an abundance of takeable fish to the sea-run specimen
up to 11 kg, and the wily residents of the upper reaches, some of which will top the 4.5 kg mark.
It is a medium sized, easy flowing river with wide gravel beaches and many intriguing holes, often flanked by
good picnic spots. It is popular for family outings since safe bathing and easy wading can be indulged in, except during occasional heavy flooding. Considerable night fishing is also done on this river.
